Making Of A Leader

Let me start this blog with my favourite quote which comes from John. C . Whitehead , Chairman, Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He says that 'The most important quality that a business leader must posses is character, usually reflected in high standards of ethical conduct and a strong sense of corporate citizenship and community responsibility beyond just making money for himself or his shareholders.

In one of my management presentation I came across a very beautiful phrase of 'Protecting your asset class' and as a leader it is of paramount importance to ensure that business is conducted in a way which generates and maximizes value for all the actors in the ecosystem.

David Thomas believes leaders are '90 percent made, maybe even more'. He says that people's leadership abilities are brought to the fore by their experiences in life, a concept embraced by Joe Badaracco, who notes, 'Sometimes there are circumstances or crises that elicit from individuals leadership abilities that even they didn't know they had.

My all time favourite is the 'Leadership Grid' which I had picked up from one of the Leadership Articles on Harvard Business Reviews as that helps me to be on track in terms of different dimension which needs to be looked into and nurtured for growing the Leadership trait.

Let's look at one of the traits 'Communication' and see how it impacts Leadership.

'Great communicators have an appreciation for positioning.' states John Kotter. 'They understand the people they're trying to reach and what they can and can't hear. They send their message in through an open door rather than trying to push through a wall.

In today's business scenario ' What you say is only the beginning as being a leader you are always in the focus and your behaviour , your actions and your decisions are also different modes through which you are communicating to your audience and they all need to be in synch.
